Search Engine Placement Tips

Step 1. Choose your keywords:

This can be the most important step of all - so make sure you get it right! You need to choose keywords (or key phrases) that are not too saturated on the search engines already (ie. a keyword like 'travel' would be a bad one to choose). Keywords like that are too hard to target first up, and you will have no chance of ranking for them any time soon. Start with something easier, if you have a page that talks about travelling to Broome, target "Broome travel" and "travel Broome" etc. These are not too competitive, but should also be popular enough to bring a few visitors through the door once you have a good search engine placement for them.

WCR can assist in finding a quality set of keywords to target for your site, using our popular Keyword Research and Analysis.

Step 2. Place your keywords:

Now you need to position your keywords around your web page. Make sure you include your keywords in all the crucial places around your web page. These include (but are not limited to) the title tag, your meta tags, heading tags, paragraph content and image alt tags. Be careful not to overdo it - search engines are very clever - if you make it plainly obvious that you are targetting a specific keyword they will know about it and could penalise your listing.

Try and make sure you remember about keyword prominance too - that means having your keywords towards the top of your content. Web pages designed using tables can sometimes look like the content is at the top, but search engine spiders read it differently. If you don't know what you're doing, its best to use a professional. WCR offer search engine placement services as a part of our Web Marketing Plans. Contact us for more information.

Step 3. Use relevant content:

There's no use getting lots of traffic to your web site if the content you are offering is not relevant and useful for your visitors. Make sure if you are targetting a keyword, you offer content that is related. For example, if you target "broome travel" - provide information on travelling to Broome, what people can do there, how they can get there etc.

Step 4. Build your link popularity:

This is absolutely essential. There's no use having a page with no links to it - search engines can't spider it and people can't visit it. Make sure you try and get some good quality relevant links pointing to not only your site, but your induvidual pages. This will build up your Google PageRank which will in turn help you to achieve better search engine placement. Links not only help with search engine rankings, but they also help with direct traffic - people visiting other sites will see your link and if they are interested, they will click on it, driving traffic to your site directly too.

Step 5. Maintain your listings:

Keep an eye on your search engine listings. Make sure your web pages don't drop out of the listings. If they do drop out, submit your site to the search engines and search for another couple of quality backlinks - you will find your site reincluded in the search engine results listings in no time.

So there you have it - a simple 5 step guide to achieving and maintaining a decent search engine placement. If all this seems a bit long winded and tricky to you, feel free to contact us here at WCR and we can talk about options for your specific web site.
