There are less than 10 main search engines that people use and those are all that you need to be concerned with. It's generally not even necessary to submit your site at all - all good search engines will find your site by spidering to it from links off other sites. This means that you need to have at least 1 good link from another site to yours - this will ensure that you get indexed in a timely manner.

2. Banner advertising
Banner advertising is generally only profitable for those selling the banner impressions - you will not receive much traffic from a banner advertising campaign as surfers have grown to recognize online ads and do everything they can to avoid clicking on them.
The money you spend on banner advertising should be invested in something more worthwhile, such as a Google Adwords campaign instead.
3. Affiliate programs:
The time you spend signing up for affiliate programs and adding them to your website could be better spent in acquiring reciprocal links from web sites related to yours. The affiliate ads are, for the most part, annoying to your website visitors and rarely will they make you the tons of money they promise to. Unless your website is strictly designed to be an affiliate vehicle, be very selective with any affiliates you choose to put on your website. Make sure that the affiliate program will truly benefit your visitor and that it is in close alignment with your website purpose and intent.
