Getting listed for free:
Nowadays it is usually not necessary to submit your web site to the search engines. Generally, if your site has at least 1 or 2 links pointing to it from other web sites, it will get crawled by the search engine spiders and submitted into their indexed automatically. Some people like the comfort of knowing that their site has definately been submitted though. So if you must submit your web site, make sure you only do it once. Search engines don't like it when you submit your site more than once - they also don't like it when you submit different pages from the same site. Just submit your main URL (ie. http://www.mysite.com) and the search engines will find the rest of your pages.
Here is a list of major search engines that still allow free submissions. This list is rapidly shrinking, mainly due to the fact that web site submissions just aren't necessary to search engines any more:
- Google - http://www.google.com/addurl.html
- Yahoo - http://submit.search.yahoo.com/free/request (You must sign up to submit for free)
That's basically it - the above is about all the worthwhile free search engine submissions you can make at the moment!
There IS, however, one more place that you must submit to for free. It is not a search engine, but a directory called the Open Directory Project:
- DMOZ - http://www.dmoz.org (Find the appropriate category and suggest a site)
